Acai bowls are all the rage in southern California. Last summer when I was down in LA for a couple weeks with my sister, we would frequent the Paradise Bowl in Manhattan Beach on the daily.
This recipe is my take on the oh-so-trendy acai bowl. Except, instead of using acai berries, I just make a green smoothie base, as acai is not very accessible here. These smoothie bowls are a fun way to mix up your morning breakfast routine. You can really customize them however you like. The following ingredients are just my personal favourite!
For the smoothie base:
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup almond milk or coconut water
handful of spinach
1 tsp of spirulina or other greens powder
1 Tbsp chia seeds
Blend all the ingredients above in your blender. You may need to add a little more liquid depending on the power of your blender. You want the consistency to be slightly thicker than a normal smoothie. Pour into your favourite bowl.
Smoothie bowl topping ideas:
Strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries
Chopped almonds or walnuts
Sprinkle your favourite toppings over the smoothie bowl and enjoy!
